“In April this year I will be riding my bike for the European Huntington federation; a cycling tour through Europe dedicated to a disease which has wrecked havoc in my family. What it means to my family is the untimely death of my grandmother, the deterioration and the eventual death of my aunt Ria and at present the decline of my aunts, Emma and Bernadette.
Although curing the disease is impossible at the moment, it doesn’t mean we have to wait and watch. The Huntington Liga, of which my aunt Bea is the European president, has successfully set up many initiatives to support families and guarantee a decent care of Huntington patients. Thanks to these tremendous efforts, the Belgian nursing houses for Huntington patients are well equipped. Unfortunately this is not the case in every country. Especially, in Eastern Europe there is an urgent need for Huntington houses.
On April 5th 2014 I am leaving for a bicycle tour through Europe, visiting several Huntington houses. The aim is to return to Belgium in August having cycled 10.000 km. My aim is double:
– raise awareness of Huntington’s disease
– fundraise for the construction of Huntington houses in Eastern Europe.”
